Description

You were once a member of a different community that you’re no longer part of. Unlike members of collectives who are allied by familiarity, shared location, history, and culture, reborne are individuals who might never meet and are unified only by their shared experience of solitude. Whether they left by choice or were ripped from their community, all reborne are disconnected from the place where they once belonged, and they carry that wound with them.

Some reborne are isolated from their community because they chose to reject or renounce it, or they could have been forcibly expelled by other members. These instances are often due to a conflict, such as clashing ideological differences, a falling out with their people, or an incident that forced them to depart. Other reborne have no knowledge of their culture, either due to their upbringing or perhaps because they lost their memory through injury or magic. Some have even returned from beyond the veil after death with no recollection of their previous life—or the culture that shaped it.

Often, reborne individuals tirelessly search for their past or feel that they’ll never belong in a collective, but all are afforded the opportunity to turn toward the future and redefine themselves while building new bonds with those they come to know and love.

Reborne are often curious, hopeful, innocent, isolated, mournful, and uncanny.

When to Choose the Reborne Community

Some players might want to choose the reborne community because they’re developing a character who was expelled from or willingly left their home. While this choice is supported by both the mechanics and the narrative of the card, it’s not the only way to craft that character arc in Daggerheart.

Many people leave their communities of origin or allegiance, either due to a difference in beliefs or a move to a new location. Even a disagreement with loved ones can lead people to turn the page on a new chapter in their lives. When someone leaves the culture they were raised in, that culture stays with them throughout their life, influencing their approach to the world. If you want to build a character who’s estranged from their home, you might be better served by taking the community card for the collective your PC left behind and conveying the friction they feel between their old culture and their new way of life.

If you take this approach, you can replace your current community card with the reborne card at a pivotal moment of growth to signify your PC’s separation from their former life and their new approach to the world. If this character arc appeals to you, talk to your GM to see how you can work it into your campaign, both mechanically and narratively.
